No-contest plea in killing of sons
Last Modified: Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 6:27 a.m.
A man charged with murdering his two young sons by intentionally setting fire to their house four years ago has pleaded no contest to reduced charges.
Charles Schuttloffel pleaded no contest Friday to two counts of involuntary manslaughter under a deal worked out with San Mateo County prosecutors.
The commercial fisherman was arrested on murder and arson charges in March last year after his two sons, ages 2 and 3, died of smoke inhalation when their San Gregorio home burned in May 2004.
But prosecutors later conceded they would have trouble proving the fire was arson.
The 37-year-old Schuttloffel now faces a maximum of 14 more months in prison instead of a possible life sentence if convicted of the murder charges.
