Sports fisherman on the New Sea Angler charter boat out of Bodega Bay landed an estimated 15,000 pounds of Humboldt, or jumbo, squid Thursday.

Captain Rick Powers said the 20 anglers caught 425 of the colossal cephalopods. He called the catch, which averaged more than 30 pounds each, “nothing unusual.”

Scientists in recent years have grown concerned that the squids are establishing themselves along the West Coast and harming existing fisheries.

“They literally devour everything in their path,” said Powers, who said the squid nonetheless remain a delicacy and the anglers now can “feed their whole neighborhood all winter long.”
